Divorce or Separation

Group counselling for women going through divorce or separation.

Group counselling can be a valuable resource for individuals going through a divorce as it provides a supportive and empathetic environment where participants can share their experiences, emotions, and challenges. In a divorce support group, individuals often find a sense of community and understanding that can be difficult to achieve elsewhere.

Firstly, group counselling offers a platform for participants to express their feelings openly, helping them to process the emotional turmoil associated with divorce. Sharing common experiences fosters a sense of validation and reduces feelings of isolation, as group members realize they are not alone in their struggles.

Moreover, group counselling provides diverse perspectives and coping strategies. Participants can learn from one another's successes and setbacks, gaining insights into effective ways of managing stress, grief, and the practical challenges of divorce. This shared knowledge can empower individuals with a broader toolkit for navigating the complexities of the divorce process.

Additionally, group counselling offers a supportive network that can contribute to improved mental health and resilience. The bonds formed within the group can provide ongoing encouragement, reducing the risk of depression and anxiety associated with divorce.

In summary, group counselling for divorce creates a supportive community, facilitates emotional expression, shares coping strategies, and fosters a sense of belonging, all of which contribute to the overall well-being of individuals facing the challenges of divorce.

Support for Migrant Women

Group support for migrant women.

The aim of this support group is to bring together women who have migrated to Australia and may be experiencing feelings of isolation, loneliness, homesickness or fear. Despite moving here by choice because of a partner, lifestyle, work opportunities or other circumstances, women of all ages can still find it challenging to live far away from their families and culture. Having moved from Europe to Australia myself, I am familiar with the challenges of living far away from my family. Friends often don’t understand what it is like to call two places home at the same time, so this group provides an opportunity to connect with other women who are in the same situation and share how you feel as a migrant, and how you have settled in and are managing a new life in a new country.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Group counselling or support group, what’s the difference?

Group counselling

Group counselling is concerned with the growth of the individual, within a group of like-minded women with similar issues. With the support of a professional and experienced therapist, the goal is for you to grow as a person. It is different from a Support Group, where the focus is on the sharing of experiences and practical advice between people in a similar situation.

VS.

Support groups

By attending one of my support groups, you will receive the support and encouragement of other women who are going through what you are. The aim of a support group is to provide connection to other women in a similar situation. This can alleviate feelings of being alone with the issue, and the provide emotional support that leads to improved coping skills.

Benefits of group work

Groups provide support and encouragement to the individuals in the group. Group members are often able to empathise with others in the group, which helps people to feel less alone with their problems. Individuals can feel encouraged to share their feelings and emotions, and by doing so they tend to learn more about themselves, and how they interact with others, within in the group as well as in life outside the group. Group members develop at their own pace and share as much or as little about themselves as they feel comfortable. The therapist guides the conversation, but also works one-on-one with individuals during the group session for brief periods.

Group therapy is also a very cost-effective method of therapy.

How does it work

My group counselling and support group sessions are held on Zoom. Each group has a maximum of six members, to allow everyone to be heard. You can attend for as short a period or as long as you like; there is no scheduled end date. When someone decides to leave, their spot will be offered to the next person on the waiting list.

Zoom can be used on most devices. You just need a quiet, private space with good internet connection, and headphones are required to maintain confidentiality.
